Symbios announces 10’000 ORIGIN® knees implanted

Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland. – Symbios today announced that an important milestone has been reached as more than 10’000 ORIGIN® custom-made knees have been implanted since its official launch in September 2018.

The ORIGIN® knee system is a custom-made total knee replacement system that intends to restore each individual’s knee alignment, shape and kinematics to improve patients’ satisfaction and clinical outcomes.

“Everyone at Symbios is proud of this remarkable achievement to have reached 10’000 ORIGIN® knee implantations in such a short period of time, despite the negative impact that the COVID-19 pandemic had on the market over the past two years” said Florent Plé, President & CEO of Symbios. “We are very excited with the success the ORIGIN® knee is encountering in EMEA markets and with the very promising clinical feedbacks our customers are reporting so far.”

The very first implantations of the ORIGIN® knee have been performed during a limited pre-market clinical evaluation from 2012 to 2018 by Dr. Michel Bonnin and Dr. Tarik Aït Si Selmi in Lyon (France) and Prof. Carsten Tibesku in Straubing (Germany). The product was officially launched in EMEA markets in September 2018 as a posterior-stabilized knee (PS), and was then completed with a modular tibial baseplate and several stem lengths. In order to address the very large segment of surgeons who prefer to preserve the posterior cruciate ligament while performing TKA, the cruciate-retaining version (CR) was launched in January 2022 with both monobloc and modular tibial baseplate options.

“With ORIGIN®, a new era in the field of total knee arthroplasty has begun as the technology now enables to provide customized knee replacement to a large number of patients worldwide” added Florent Plé. “The entire Symbios team is proud to be a leader in improving clinical outcomes of total knee replacement patients, as well as to providing a more cost-efficient model for hospitals by reducing the number of implants and instruments they are required to store and reprocess.”

Symbios will present its new ORIGIN® CR knee prosthesis at the upcoming Swiss Orthopaedics congress, to be held June 22-24, 2022 in Basel, Switzerland.
